DRAGONSCLAW interview with Giles Lavery - Judgment Day is coming...

Dragonsclaw is a new band from Australia playing Power Metal. Just one year after their debut album "Prophecy" and the band is in recording sessions to unleash the second attack. I had the pleasure to speak with the singer (and crazy metalhead!) Giles Lavery about the upcoming album and other interesting stuff. Enjoy!

One year after your debut album “Prophecy”, you are in recording sessions for a new album. What was the reaction of the fans and press for “Prophecy”?
The response has been great! It's been a slow build and a busy year promoting the first album, but we are getting great feedback from all over the world... In Japan we even made the Burrn Magazine import charts at number 6 which was a huge surprise… but yes, little by little word is getting around! The reviews have all been great, which is another pleasant surprise.
Right away and you start writing new songs. Did you gave any gigs in Australia and how easy or difficult is to play metal and organize live shows there?
Yes, we jumped straight into album number 2, after a short tour here with Steve Grimmett. It is VERY hard to play live here in Sydney, Australia... Our type of heavy metal is just a small scene here, just a couple bands and its hard to draw a big crowd.
Can you introduce us few metal bands from Australia? Which one are your favourites and which ones considered the “classic ones” for Australian metal fans?
Black Majesty from Melbourne are great and they have been doing their thing a long while. Here in Sydney there is Lord and you probably have heard of Mortal Sin... they have broken up now I think but they made a big impact in the late 80s, so they would be a classic Australian band.
You are in recording sessions for the next album. What is the writing process and in what production stage are you at the moment?
I am ready to start recording vocals next week! We have finally settled on all the other parts, got the drums down and the guitars, bass and keys. We made some revisions to some tracks... but I think I am ready to track vocals next week... You will hear a new track around mid October all going to plan... a little in advance of the album.
Which are your music and lyrical inspirations?
The whole band is all over the map so me personally it's the classic stuff, no question about that... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Sabbath , Rainbow, Warlord, Riot, Jag Panzer, Deep Purple, Savatage, Gary Moore, MSG, some early Manowar, Yngwie, Scorpions, I could list on and on ... even a band like Obsession... I loved their two 80's albums which is of course Mike Vescera's early group… They have a new one out soon too, looking forward to that!
Lyrically: certain movies, war, apocalyptic themes... I hope to mix it up a bit too... I don't want to rehash the same stuff over and over either.

You also have some special guests there, right?
Yes, David Reece from Accept and Jack Starr from Burning Starr! We are honoured to have them both on the album!
Do you have a title for the album, release date and label?
The album is titled "Judgement Day" and it will be released early 2013, but you will hear a couple tracks before then... starting mid October! We have had numerous offers from quite a few labels... it's been surprising people coming to US this time... we should have the final decision settled in the coming weeks and we will announce it then.
Which ones are you favourite new metal bands?
Like I said I'm a classic rock / metal guy... but some bands out there like White Wizzard, Enforcer, bands like that, they are keeping the metal flame burning.... I hope so anyway... From 2011 I loved the rock opera "Lyraka" which featured Graham Bonnet, & Tommy Hart. Andy is working on his next instalment and I can't wait to hear what he has in store!
And finally, which are your plans for the near future?
We have a lot planned for this album, video clips, promoting it and getting it to the metal fans all over the world hopefully! We have a solid strategy which we kind of lacked a little bit last time... This time everything will happen for a reason and is carefully timed and planned out.
